Hey readers! I have a super special post for you today! In this post, I will be reviewing and raving about my friend Allie Lynn’s new novella, The Color Of A Horse’s Song, a coming-of-age YA story! And make sure to read to the end of the post for a chance to win one of the three exclusive paperback versions!!
Want to know how I review my reads? Check out the criteria here:

Blurb
Claire Larkton, an ADHD-brained writer, sees color through sound.
Colton Myers, an autistic prodigy, hears music within chaos.
Best friends since third grade, the two of them have spent every summer on horseback between their ranches, and their last summer before high school is planned to be their most epic yet. Then Colton’s estranged father shows up from prison, and their plan for their epic summer turns into a fight to keep Colton from moving away.
Claire doesn’t want to lose her best friend, and Colton is sick of change, but as the summer wanes on and their obstacles take new shape, their experiment to get rid of Colton’s dad has a different result– one that Claire isn’t sure she can stand.
The summer-friends vibes of Honey Butter meet the musical world of August Rush in this coming-of-age story about letting go, living beyond the black-and-white, and enjoying every moment, no matter how long it lasts.
Personal Review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
AHHHHHH THIS BOOK IS SOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!
*ahem*
*deep breath*
I’ve been following Allie Lynn on her site Equine On The Mind and I have absolutely devoured her stories in her newsletters. Her writing is so witty and hilarious while simultaneously juggling hard topics like mental health. She has such a gift.
So, when the opportunity to join her street team for The Color Of A Horse’s Song came up, I immediately signed up!
AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!
First, Claire. Sweet Claire. Gosh, she jumped out of the page and into my mind so vividly. And Colton! Gosh, their relationship was so cute and beautiful and had me on the verge of (happy) tears so many times. Their little adventures durning the summer were just so full of joy and purity– 🥹
And I love Allie’s commitment to writing horses correctly. Because wow, is that hard to find. You won’t find any city-girl-with-no-horse-experience-somehow-tames-the-wild-mustang nonsense here. The horses read so real to me.
Aaaaaand the cows, of course! Gosh, I love cows.
*ahem*
The plot was perfectly paced and resolved wonderfully. I loved watching Claire and Colton grow and mature during this.
I would highly recommend this sweet book to anyone! It does handle some hard topics like autism and the foster care system.
