Hey friends! Welcome to another book review! In this post, I’ll be recapping my recent read, Dating and Dragons by Kristy Boyce, a YA romance!

Want to know how I review my reads? Check out the guidelines here:

Blurb

Quinn Norton is starting over at a new high school and hopes that joining a D&D game will be the trick to making friends. The plan sounds even better when she’s invited into a group that includes Logan Weber, the cute and charming guy she met on her first day of class. But this isn’t your average D&D campaign— this group livestreams their games and enforces strict rules: no phones allowed, and no dating other group members.

Quinn is willing to accept the rules, even if it makes Logan off-limits. And she quickly learns that doing so won’t be a problem, since Logan goes from charismatic to insufferable as soon as she agrees to join. As their bickering—and bantering—intensifies inside and outside the game, Quinn can’t help wondering: Is Logan’s infuriating behavior a smokescreen for hidden feelings? Quinn is risking it all, and the twenty-sided dice are rolling!

Personal Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ack, this book was too cute! After reading Dungeons and Drama, I quickly fell in love with Boyce’s fun writing style and vibrant characters. Dating and Dragons did not disappoint!

Quinn was cute, nerdy, and sweet. I loved her internal conflict and growth throughout the story. She felt like such a real character and I could definitely relate to her. I also really enjoyed the dynamic between her and her brother, even if they weren’t on great terms. It made it more believable… you know?

And DON’T GET ME STARTED ON LOGAN. AHHHH HE’S SOOOO CUTE! He was such a sweetheart and a green flag and I was falling for him with every page. And he’s so protective!!!!

And Quinn’s grandma! She had me laughing out loud several times. I can kind of relate to the embarrassing grandparents but luckily nothing at that level lol.

The plot was so much better than Dungeons and Drama. I liked the more immersive level of D&D content and the whole moving-to-a-new-school element. It felt much more thought out than the first book. It kept me on the edge of my seat.

I had two main problems with this one, however:

  1. Sloane’s character. It was sooooo confusing trying to read any of (her, his??) their interacting because of their pronouns. Gosh, it was so confusing. Not to mention a literal grammatical error. Like, why can’t we just say she or he???
  2. The romance. It got to be a little much at the end, to the point where it kinda felt lust-y. I didn’t love that part.

Overall, I think four stars works perfectly for Dating and Dragons. I devoured it in three days, and I would recommend it to older teens.

Tropes

Spice

🌶️🌶️

A few kisses, described modestly. A few borderline steamy scenes. “Sexy” used once or twice. Otherwise, mostly mild.

💬💬💬

Taking the Lord’s name in vain and a few cusswords. I believe only three used, but I could be wrong. Moderate words.

Violence

🗡️

None, except for fictional violence in a game.

Religion

I don’t remember any being discussed

Positive Messages/Influences

Amazing group of friends that are welcoming. Strong grandparent-grandchild relationships.

Negative Messages/Influences

A character that uses they/them pronouns. A bit of lust. Toxic friends. Bad sibling relationships. Parents having a favorite child.
